What is Orthodox?
The Orthodox Church, also known as the Holy Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church, is the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church founded by our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the true continuation of the Church established by the Holy Apostles and has remained unwavering in its faith, doctrine, and sacred traditions for over two millennia. Apostolic Foundations The Orthodox Church traces its origins to the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, empowering them to preach the Gospel to all nations. The Church’s authority and faith are rooted in the teachings of Christ, preserved and transmitted through the Holy Apostles and their successors—the bishops—who have upheld the sacred deposit of faith without alteration. Core Beliefs Orthodoxy confesses the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed as the fundamental declaration of faith, affirming belief in the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It upholds the divinity and humanity of Christ, His salvific work, His Resurrection, and the promise of life eternal. The Orthodox Church maintains that salvation is a journey of theosis—union with God through His grace and the transformative life in Christ. Sacred Tradition and Holy Scripture Orthodoxy holds Sacred Tradition as the living transmission of divine revelation, encompassing Holy Scripture, the teachings of the Church Fathers, the Ecumenical Councils, liturgical worship, and the lives of the saints. The Holy Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are an integral part of this Tradition, interpreted within the life of the Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Liturgical and Sacramental Life The Orthodox Church is profoundly liturgical, centered on the Divine Liturgy, where the faithful partake of the Holy Eucharist—the true Body and Blood of Christ. The Church administers the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments), including Baptism, Chrismation, Confession, Marriage, and Ordination, as means of sanctification and divine grace. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria As one of the ancient Patriarchates established by the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa stands as a beacon of Orthodoxy in the African continent. With its apostolic mission, it continues to proclaim the Gospel, uphold the Orthodox faith, and serve as a spiritual guide to all who seek the truth of Christ’s Church. Through its unwavering commitment to apostolic faith, Holy Tradition, and the sanctification of life, Orthodoxy remains the unshaken pillar of divine truth, calling all people to communion with the Living God.

The Foundations of Orthodox Theology Orthodox theology is deeply rooted in Holy Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the teachings of the Holy Fathers. The Orthodox Church proclaims the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed as the unalterable confession of faith, affirming the Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—as the foundation of all truth. Through the writings of the Church Fathers, the Ecumenical Councils, and the lives of the saints, the faithful are called to immerse themselves in the inexhaustible richness of divine wisdom. Living the Faith To be Orthodox is to participate fully in the life of the Church, for faith is not a mere intellectual exercise but a transformative journey of theosis—union with God. This journey is nurtured through the sacramental life, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and adherence to the moral and spiritual teachings of the Church. The Divine Liturgy, as the pinnacle of worship, unites the faithful with Christ in the Holy Eucharist, sustaining them in their spiritual ascent. Educational Resources and Spiritual Formation The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria is devoted to fostering theological literacy and spiritual growth among its members. This section provides a wealth of articles, catechetical materials, and theological reflections tailored to both those newly embracing Orthodoxy and lifelong members seeking a deeper understanding of their faith. A Call to Deeper Understanding The words of the Holy Apostle Peter resonate with all who seek the truth: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15). Knowing one’s faith is both a sacred duty and a lifelong endeavor. By engaging with the teachings of the Church, studying the wisdom of the Fathers, and living out the commandments of Christ, every Orthodox Christian is called to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord, bearing witness to the eternal truth of the Holy Orthodox Church.
